Located in the vibrant Friedrichshain neighborhood, the sly Berlin is an extraordinary hotel that blends the area’s history with a distinctive, contemporary architectural style. For this complex—comprising several historic buildings and typical Berlin courtyards—a holistic architectural and interior design concept was developed that preserves the industrial character of the existing structures while creating a new urban identity. At the heart of the design is the interplay between old and new. The carefully renovated existing buildings are connected spatially and aesthetically through new architectural elements. The centerpiece of the hotel is a spacious, light-filled restaurant beneath an imposing glass roof structure. Lush greenery, select designer furniture, and a custom lighting design developed in collaboration with Kardorff Ingenieure from Berlin create a unique atmosphere here, somewhere between an urban greenhouse and an elegant restaurant. The concept continues throughout the 150 individually designed hotel rooms. High-quality natural materials such as oak and natural stone, carefully coordinated colors and textiles, and select design classics characterize the spaces. Historical elements such as round arches and bay windows were deliberately preserved and integrated into the new design. The result is a multifaceted urban retreat that embraces Berlin’s contrasts and translates them into a distinctive spatial identity. A hotel that combines architecture, design, and hospitality into a holistic experience, while deliberately emphasizing durability, authenticity, and timeless materials.
