With the revitalization of Hall D on the grounds of the Hamburg Meat Wholesale Market, an important testament to industrial history is being carefully brought into the present. The goal of the project is to preserve the historical identity of the landmark-protected building, restore its original architectural quality, and at the same time lay the foundation for a contemporary use. At the heart of the renovation is a respectful approach to the existing building fabric. The historic facades are being carefully restored, and new windows are modeled after the original design, reviving the hall’s characteristic appearance. In the process, historic elements are not only reconstructed but also given a contemporary interpretation in selected areas. Particular attention is being paid to the exposure and restoration of defining structural elements. Former structures and technical installations, including the historic steel frameworks of the animal transport conveyors, are being preserved as visible traces of the building’s original use and brought back to life. They tell the story of the site’s industrial past and lend the building its distinctive identity. Through the interplay of existing elements and targeted new interventions, a vibrant space is emerging that not only preserves history but also passes it on. Hall D is being secured for the future as a unique example of Hamburg’s architectural heritage and infused with new life. At the same time, a versatile space is emerging that unites diverse functions under one roof. In the future, Hall D will house a variety of uses and rental spaces side by side, including a crafts academy, sports facilities, and dining options. The interplay of education, physical activity, and social interaction creates new synergies and gives the historic building a vibrant, contemporary identity. In this way, the former industrial hall is evolving into a versatile venue that opens itself up to diverse user groups and connects the site’s history with new perspectives.
