ABOUT THE PROJECT

Conversion and revitalization of a restaurant located at the historical “Schanzenhöfe” in Hamburg.
The historical cattle halls are located in the middle of the district Schanzenviertel. Until the 1950s, these halls were used for importing and shipping calves and pigs. These former cattle halls have now been revitalized and modernized. The restaurant “Bullerei” is located in the western part of the building. The idea was to retain the character of the old building by arranging the individual functional areas. A glass cabinet with knuckle of veal and pork sides let the guests know of what’s happening in the kitchen. The deli's outdoor dining area is located in front of the building. Natural stone floors and non-plastered walls preserve the charm of the historical cattle halls. The perfect combination between the historical structure and the new architecture defines the atmosphere of the “Bullerei”. Design classics were deliberately mixed with simple objects. The same applies to the furniture. The dining tables made of old oak are framed by modern graffiti. A large number of the luminaires are custom-made, which were chosen to fit the concept. The revitalization and conversion of the cattle halls, which are about to be demolished, will revitalize and upgrade the surrounding neighborhood as a whole.
