About the project

The historical cattle halls are located in the middle of the district Schanzenviertel. Until the 1950s, these halls were used for importing and shipping calves and pigs. For a long time, these halls were only partially used as storage spaces and were in very poor condition due to weathering and graffiti. In order to save the building from demolition, they were revitalized, modernized and converted for new contemporary uses such as gastronomy, commercial and office spaces. Inspired by the old industrial architecture, a concept was developed to preserve the building ensemble. During the first construction phase various structural extensions of the past years were removed and the building was restored to its original structure. The halls that were once connected are now separated from each other, just as they used to be. In order to make the 100 m long and 60 m wide building usable in a contemporary way with several self-contained rental units, the middle part of the building’s shed roof was almost completely removed. In doing so an inner courtyard was created that allows natural lighting and ventilation for the particular rooms. At the same time the courtyard serves as a meeting point away from the surrounding vibrant neighborhood. The existing wooden part of the roof was removed and the framework made of cast iron was renovated. In close cooperation with the monument conservation authorities, traditional materials were. Due to the revitalization and conversion of the historical cattle halls that were about to be demolished, the Schanzenviertel received an upgrade with new qualities. In addition to Tim Mälzer's Bullerei, the Ratsherrn brewery and the Elbgold coffee roasters, a music kindergarten as well as a frame factory and a film studio and a media production company have all found their home in the new Schanzenhöfe. The original building structure was preserved and upgraded with modern, contemporary architecture.
